Xu had a rich variety of works, oil painting. Sketches and calligraphy, and he's animal paintings. Especially horse painting, had won high acclaims for their bold and lively styles. His horses were valued not only for their charming look, but also as a means to convey Xu's patriotic feelings. He had practiced hard in sketching horses and had drawn about a thousand drafts. He also studied the anatomy of horses and observed the postures and expressions of horses in great details. In the end, he did not have to make drafts and just painted directly on paper. He once said, "I love horses even there are few horses here (south China). In particular, horses' own power and courage. It's a symbol of keeping advance." Before Xu started the freehand brushwork, he had practiced hard in sketching horses and had drawn about a thousand drafts. He also studied the anatomy of horses and observed the postures and expressions of horses in great details. In the end, he had built his own theory in painting horses: "Nostrils and breathing capacity should be big. Legs must be long. Hoofs ought to be flexible. And the most difficult part is the ankle."
